Hugh Alexander Bingham was the first son born to Hugh W. Bingham and Mary A. Walker Bingham. He was born in Tennessee and in 1825 moved to Copiah County, Mississippi with his parents and brothers, Simon Walker Bingham (1823-1864) and William Riley Bingham (1824-1869). His father died on 7 February 1826, and his brother, Asa W. Bingham, was born in April 1826; Asa died in 1863. Hugh's mother married John W. Moore in 1833.
Hugh married first, Martha Rawls, about 1844, possibly in Pike County, Mississippi. They had one son, William Harrison Bingham, born 13 Dec 1845.
Hugh married second, Joyce Twiner on 29 October 1849 in Claiborne County, Mississippi. Following her death in 1871, he married Matilda Wiseman Smith Dukes in Jasper County, Texas.
