On January 4, 1873, he was married to Alice Oman, who departed this life in 1886. To this union were born 6 children, 5 of whom preceded him in death; Samuel Monroe, Anna Frances, Charles Reuben, Mary Alice and Jennie May. One son Clarence survives, residing near Claremont.
On June 30, 1887, he was again marrried to Hettie Harmon, and to this union were born 7 children, 3 preceding him in death; Nola, Grace and Flossie. Those suviving him are Della Slunaker, of Robinsdale, Minn.; Edgar, Addie Gardner and Glenn, all of Olney. Besides his wife and 5 children, he leave 31 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one half-brother, Charles, of Texas, and one half-sister, Clara Skaggs, of Lawrence County, and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
In his early life he was converted and joined the United Brethren Church, of which he was a faithful member until death. Why do we mourn for dying friends, or shake at deaths alarms? Tis but the voice that Jesus sends to call them to his arms.
The funeral was conducted by Rev Longbrake, of the U.B. Church of Olney, assisted by S.O. Gillaspie. The funeral and burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
