Arthur Dewey Carter Jr., a former resident of Moffat County,CO. went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006. He was born April 30, 1924, in Spring Garden, Ill.
Carter was a diesel engineer on the Mississippi, spent 20 years in the coal mines of Illinois and Colorado, was a construction worker, mechanic and did miscellaneous jobs when the mines closed.
The work he loved the most was his 10 years as deputy sheriff in Moffat County, CO. Dewey also served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during 1943, achieving rank of corporal before taking a medical discharge.
He loved reading, playing cards, and hunting for and dreaming about finding that "lost treasure" or "gold mine."
After retiring in 1986, he spent his winters in Bouse, Ariz., and summers in Craig, Grand Junction, Co. or Dexter, Mo.
In July 2001, he married Suzy Eims of Des Moines, Wash., and made his home there.
In January 2005, he was diagnosed with throat cancer. He underwent radiation, chemotherapy and surgery in August but lost his yearlong battle when the cancer returned and pneumonia set in. He died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Seattle.
He is survived by his wife, Suzy, of Des Moines, Wash.; children, Gary Carter of Tilden, Ill., Dana Carter and family of French Camp, Calif., and Diana Booco and family of Craig, Co.; step-children, Don Jones, Doris Aitken, Debbie Lowe, Dennis Jones and families, all residents of Craig; a half-brother, Richard Martin of Grand Junction, CO; and niece, Darla McFarland and family of Grand Junction, Co.
Dewey was a gentleman at heart and a real cowboy. He will be missed greatly.
A small service will be held at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Maple Valley, Wash.
A gathering of family and friends is being planned for late April in Craig.
