Charles "Chilly" Schwartz died on Friday, November 27, 2009, in Austin, where he had been living since July, 2008. Charles was born on April 19, 1918 in Houston. He grew up on a farm in College Station. An Aggie through and through, he graduated from A&M Consolidated School in 1938 and attended Texas A&M University from 1938 to1940. During World War II Charles served as an Army Air Force Master Sgt. with the European Division Air Transport Command in Italy and Greece. After the war he returned to College Station and worked as a carpenter until 1951 when he was hired as a civilian for the U.S. Air Force. He spent 34 years in the Civil Service before retiring in 1985. His job took him from Bryan to Mobile, Alabama and San Antonio, Texas. He married Judith Frances Matula on June 6, 1954, a devoted wife of 55 years, who nursed him through many years of declining health.

Charles spent his retirement years in Bryan where he and Judy enjoyed carpentry, gardening and socializing at the Sons of Hermann Lodge #99, American Legion Post #159, and VFW Post 4692.They were members of First United Methodist Church in Bryan, TX. They had one daughter, Charlotte, who resides in Austin with her husband, Rob and two daughters, Robyn and Caroline. His nephew Steve Schwartz and wife Leigh were neighbors during part of that time and they developed a close friendship that Charles cherished. He was a loving husband and devoted father, father-in-law, brother, uncle, and grandfather. He always wanted the best for his family and will always be remembered for his generosity, creativity, and cheerful personality.

Charles was preceded in death by his mother and father, Charles and Frances Schwartz; brothers Thomas, Robert, and Richard Schwartz; sister Elizabeth Winkler; brothers-in-law John Winkler, and William Schneider.

He is survived by wife, Judith M. Schwartz; daughter and son-in law, Charlotte and Rob Aanstoos and granddaughters Robyn and Caroline Aanstoos; brothers Alfred and Edward and his wife Rene Schwartz; sister Joretta Schneider, sisters-in-law Martha Schwartz and Josephine Schwartz, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 3, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. Interment will follow at College Station Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday with the family receiving guests one hour prior to service.
