Displayed remarkable coolness and courage during an enemy raid. Though seriously wounded he was the last to retire from an untenable position, French Croix de Guerre (Silver Star). On July 31, 1918, he displayed great courage during a raid against his outpost in directing the fire of his men and firing himself even though grievously wounded in the head by a grenade. Was the last to retire and covered the retreat of his unit.
