MRS. EMILY KEYES LEARNED OF FLORENCE PASSES AWAY
Widow of Dr. John Barr Learned Was Born in Florence 79 Years Ago

Mrs. Emily Keyes Learned died at her home in Florence today. Mrs. Learned was born in Florence March 23, 1844, the daughter of Samuel L. and Roxana Gaylord Hill. She attended the public schools in Florence and later attended a private school in Claverick, N.Y., the Allen school in West Newton, and the Dio Lewis school of physical culture in Lexington. She taught physical culture in Northampton and in Aurora, Ill. for several years.
In 1869, she married Anthony Sheffeld. There were two children by this marriage, Charles A. Sheffeld of this city, and Mary Sheffeld Boardman of Bube River, N.H. [perhaps Beebe River?]. She married Dr. John Barr Learned on Feb. 13, 1884. In this marriage there were two children, Raymond H. Learned of French Lick, Ind., and Wilfred H. Learned of Florence. There was also a stepson, Myron L. Learned of Omaha, Neb.
Mrs. Learned had lived at 117 High stree in Florence since 1873. Of recent years she had spent the winters with her daughter, Mrs. Boardman, in Clearwater, Fla. Mrs. Learned seemed to be in better health than usual during the winter, and returned to Florence on May 6th. On Friday she took a slight cold and the end came quite suddenly, after being confined to her bed only three days.
Since her birth, Mrs. Learned had resided in Florence and she was interested in everything pertaining to its welfare. In 1865, the year after the Free Congregational Society, (Unitarian church), was formed, she became a member, and she was one of the original trustees of the Florence kindergarten, now called Hill Institute, in honor of her father, who founded it.
When Alfred T. Lilly gave the library, which bears his name, she was appointed one of its trustees. Some of the older residents will remember her as a member of the Florence Dramatic club. Besides her children, Mrs. Learned is survived by her brother, Arthur G. Hill.
The funeral will be held at her late residence, 117 High street, Florence, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Friends will please omit flowers.
