Calvin E. Roberds 72, of Springfield, died Monday, October 23, 1995 in Ohio State University Hospital, following a month of declining health. He was born September 5, 1923, in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Luther E. and Mary H. (Schaffner) Roberds. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He retired in January 1985 with 32 years of service from the Springfield Fire Department as a platoon commander. Cal was a member of the First Baptist Church, a Past-President of Cardinal Squares, and the Clark County Historical Society. He was an avid organ and keyboard entertainer, visiting area nursing homes monthly and at Cliff Mill and Tipp City Roller Mills. Cal authored the book, "From Buckets to Diesels, A History of the Springfield Fire Fighter" and was active in the C F Water Group. Survivors include his wife, Donna (Ream) of Springfield, whom he married in January of 1983; two daughters, Linda (Steve) Massie and Sandra K. Shirk, all of Springfield; a stepdaughter, Karen Sue Anderson of Urbana, Ohio; six grandchildren, Jeff Massie, Stephanie (Rob) Riegel, Samantha R. Caylor, Harold R. Mobley, Michelle (Walt) Dockins and Alisha K. Anderson, seven great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Bill (Beverly) Roberds; two nieces, Barbara (Jack) Montgomery and Patty Ann Zugelder. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen in 1982; mother, Mary in 1991; daughter, Rebecca Sue; and a brother, Luther Roberds. Friends may call Thursday from 6-9 p.m. in the Woods-Allgier Funeral Home. Fire Fighters turn-out will be at 6 p.m. Thursday. Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Dr. J. Wesley Babian officiating. Interment will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the First Baptist Church of the CF Water Group.
