Maybelle Hethington was born on Fairfield Plantation in the Adams Run/Yonges Island area. Her father and his brothers owned and ran several interests in the area, including a lumber mill.
She grew up being a tall, atheletic girl, swimming in the city competitions. She lived in several houses in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, including a home on King Street she and mother,May, lived in for about 40 years. Travel was part of her upbringing and she and May traveled extensively.
Early in 1971, she flew to Europe and toured around Germany,Austria,England, etc. with her USAF son and family while they were stationed near Frankfurt, Germany. Her favorite snack was any type of cake or baked item with whipped cream. The family joke was "She never passed a bakery she didn't like". She also enjoyed playing Bridge, and later became involved in tournament play. Maybelle was a lifetime member of the Huguenot Society of Charleston, and her research enabled her to register her grandchildren as well. Her research was also used in a genealogy book compiled by her son's mother-in-law, Carnice Jennings Groves, in 1971. She enjoyed her 2 granddaughters by her son, even though his Air Force career kept them moving all over the world. Her daughter had 4 sons and she saw them whenever they could visit from upstate.
