Bella and two daughters, Etta, died in a terrible fire:
Edward (EB) and Bella Friel had an elder daughter named Mamie Isabel Friel.
In 1898, she married Nigel Jackson, a man with a shady past of petty crimes and assault charges, but who was a policeman, a world-class bicycle racer (all the rage then) and baseball player on the police team. He was dashing, with a handlebar moustache, and had many friends. At some point, they adopted a son, who died in May 1902, aged 20 mo. In October, Mamie filed suit for divorce from Nigel, citing extreme cruelty, which he denied. He claimed she saw other men and that her mother and others were influencing her. At the end of October, tragedy struck.
Mamie had moved in with her parents and two sisters, Etta (Henrietta) and Georgiana. James had already moved out on his own and was a purser on an interisland steam ship.
On Oct 31st, in the wee hours of the morning, the EB Friel house caught fire. EB wife woke him, and he told everyone to get downstairs. When he got outside, his family was not with him, but he could not go back in. Mamie had gone back for some valuables and was caught by the fire. She escaped badly burned, and died later that day. Bella, Etta and Georgiana were trapped at an upstairs window (I think Bella went back for the girls), being urged by a police officer to jump out of the window. Bella told the girls to do it. They said she must come, too. She balked, saying she was too heavy to survive a jump. Then she told the girls she'd follow them, to entice them to leave her. Georgiana jumped, and escaped death or major injury. As Bella declined again to jump, Etta was heard to say, "Well, I'll stay with you, Mama." Both died in the fire, almost immediately. Hearing the screams, Edward was nearly driven mad with grief.
Etta and Bella were buried in the same coffin. The funeral was the same day as the fire, along with Mamie's. It is described in detail in the articles abt the fire. The children who knew Etta contributed to a fund for Etta's beautifully carved white marble stone.
Nigel Jackson was charged with arson and murder. There was strong circumstantial evidence, but he was acquitted. He later married a lady named Nellie, and they had a daughter whose age in the 1930 census indicates she was born the year of the fire. I don't know if Nigel was her natural father, but it's still ironic.
I went to the cemetery today. I found and photographed Etta's stone, Bella's stone next to it -- both in the Cornwell plot (Bella's family) across Nuuanu Ave from the main cemetery. Mamie was there, too. I took pictures of all the stones, because they all hold clues. Bella's sister had married a man named Vida, from Chile, and they are in that plot.
