Nolan was the 8th child born to William Lee and Willie Lee (Stacy) Baugh. He started at a young age, in the Trickham store, cleaning shop, shining shoes, pressing pants and skirts and then he got to try cutting hair. He became a barber. Nolan also did some farming.

He first married Beulah Harris. They had no children, but raised two girls, Wanda Mae Brooks (a niece) and Hazel Ruth Harris (a sister). Nolan and Beulah moved to Slaton, Texas in 1945 and she passed away in 1951. In 1953, Nolan married Lillian (Bingham) Forson in Lubbock, Texas.

After Nolan retired, he moved to Early, Texas and while fighting a grass fire, had a heart attack. He passed away at the hospital.
