Aviation Cadet R. J. McMahon, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #4978 in 1936. Entered active service via the pre-war AVCAD program.

AVCAD McMahon lost his left arm in an aircraft accident in 1937, and would be medically retired with the rank of Ensign in 1941.
