Longtime manager of the North Carolina State Fair, Dorton was known as "Mr. Fair." He took over the managerial position of the State Fair which was losing money fast and within one year, put it back in the black.

A veterinarian, Dorton also managed the Cleveland County Fair in Shelby and the Southern States Fair in Charlotte. Dorton died of a heart attack.
