She was born Ruth Mary Duke on June 8, 1918, in Liverpool, New York. Loving nicknamed Mary by her family and friends, Mary was raised in Syracuse, New York.
Marrying her childhood sweetheart, and her best friend, Carter Stonecipher in 1935, the two would stay married for 74 years and continue to hold a bond forever. During her life, she bore and doted over her eight children: Elaine, John, David, Daniel, Phillip, Carol, Sandra, and Ronald.
During WWII Mary wanted to do her part for her country by working for Remington Corporation helping make materials for the soldiers. In the mid-1960's, she reentered the workforce by taking a post at then-popular Dey Brother's Department Store in downtown Syracuse. During her 25 years at the store, she gained respect from supervisors, co-workers, and most of all from her customers who felt she went above and beyond to serve their needs and the needs of the store.
Surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren, Mary slipped into rest on December 1, 2009. She was laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Syracuse on December 7, 2009.
In her death, she left behind her loving husband, Carter; seven of her children; 59 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by both of her parents; all of her brothers; her son, Ronald; her son-in-law, Malcolm Peymen; her grandson, Jacob T. Brown; her great-granddaughter, Imari L. Irons; and her granddaughter, Deborah L. Buskey.
