Nursing Heroine.Freda was awarded The George Cross for her efforts to save newborn babies in a fire at The Dellwood Maternity Hospital in 1954.Freda then 41,suffered terrible injuries following the fire in Dellwood Maternity Hospital, Liebenrood Road,West Reading,on April 18,1954,as she used her sister's cap to bat away the flames.Thirteen babies aged between six hours and 10 days died in the inferno which started accidentally in a boiler.Two more tots,a baby boy aged 12 days,and baby girl of aged seven days, survived.Her efforts were even written about in iconic US magazine Time.She was very badly burnt in the fire and taken to hospital where she was on the critical list for a long time,but she made a full recovery.
