Carl Schweitzer Aged Resident of St. Nazianz Dies

St. Nazianz: Carl Schweitzer, aged 89 oldest resident of St. Nazianz, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday following a stroke.
Mr. Schweitzer was born in Germany June 3, 1842 and came here at the age of 19 years. He conducted a farm in this vicinity until 22 years ago, when he retied and moved to the village. His first wife having preceded him in death, Mr. Schweitzer was married forty years ago to Mrs. Stahl of St. Nazianz, who survives him.

Besided his widow, survivors include 12 sons and daughters; Mrs. Emma Murphy, Davenport, Ia.; Mrs. Gertrude Knier, Osman; Mrs. Rosa Grimm, Milwaukee; Mrs. Tillie Gray, Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Lena Meyer, Kiel; Mrs. Silvina Mertens, Manitowoc and Miss Martha Schweitzer, at home; John Schweitzer, Washington, D.C; Joseph, Wilwaukee; Andrew, Minnesota; Edward, Vonrath, Wis.; and Louis who lives on a farm near Kiel. Two brothers and two sisters peceded him in death. There are also many grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren who mourn his death.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Gregorys church. The Rev. Finton Holznecht will officate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Schweitzer, Carl (June 3, 1842-Nov. 19, 1932 –husband to three wives –first wife was Gertrude Durst [died after childbirth on March 21, 1881 –there were 9 children from this marriage], second wife was Magdaline nee Kruzenski Schroeder [a widowed woman who died on March 24, 1891 –there were 5 children from this second marriage –with 4 added children from Magdaline’s first marriage], and third wife was Anna nee Peterl Stahl [a divorced woman Carl married on Nov. 20, 1892 in civil ceremony in City of Manitowoc –there were 2 children from this third marriage –with 2 added children from Anna’s first marriage] –son of John Schweitzer and Marianna Hahn –born Württemberg, Schwartzwald, Baden –Carl was a younger brother of Ignatz Schweitzer, who died in the City of Manitowoc [Jan. 23, 1833-March 25, 1902] –immigrated to the US on the boat Admiral departing from the Port of Havre, France, entering the Port of New York on Feb. 10, 1858 in company of his widowed mother and his siblings Ignace [age 24], Mathilde [age 15], Marie [age 12], and Mathias [age 9] –farmer and basket weaver for 70 years –on Oct. 5, 1866 purchased the northern 20 acres of the W1/2 of the SW1/4 of Section 23, Town of Eaton from Fr. Ambrose Oschwald –a farmstead was then created on these 20 acres –in the 1870 census for the Town of Eaton, Carl and his first wife Gertrude are shown living on this farm with their children Emma, Mary, and John –on July 6, 1872 sold these same 20 acres back to Fr. Oschwald –on July 6, 1872, the same day he sold the 20 acres back to Fr. Oschwald, Carl purchased the adjoining 20 acres of the N1/2 of the NE1/4 of the SW1/4 of Section 23, Town of Eaton from Fr. Oschwald and created a farmstead at 19217 Baer Road –on May 6, 1873 purchased the 40 acres of the NE1/4 of the SE1/4 of Section 22, Town of Eaton –this purchase gave Carl a 60 acre farm –on Sept. 12, 1891 purchased the 20 acres of the S1/2 of the NE1/4 of the SW1/4 of Section 23 from Joachim Kusterman –this purchase gave Carl an 80 acre farm –on June 23, 1910 sold this 80 acre farm centered at 19217 Baer Road to Joseph Holzer and his wife Mary Bassel and purchased, in turn, the Joseph Holzer house St. Nazianz –on May 10, 1910 purchased the house at 224 West Main Street in St. Nazianz from Joseph Holzer –Carl lived in this house as a basket weaver until his death in 1932 –his widow Anna lived here until selling on Sept. 1, 1937 –died from “heart disease due to old age”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 1, Row 5, Lot 19 –stone] [third marriage record Manitowoc 6-175] [death record Manitowoc 27-95]
