WILLIAM GROH OF ST. NAZIANZ PASSES AWAY THIS MORNING

St. Nazianz - William Groh, 59, died early this morning at his home here after an illness of a year with apoplexy. He was born in 1869 in the town of Meeme, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Groh. Thirty-eight years ago he was married to Miss Barbara Koenig of St. Fidelis. Mr. Groh was a member of St. Gregory's church, of the Holy Name society, of the Catholic Knights, and of the Catholic Foresters. He was the proprietor of a general store at St. Nazianz for thirty-two years. He served as vice-president of the fire department and also as vice-president of the St. Nazianz State bank for many years. He resigned the latter position last month.

Deceased is survived by his widow, four sons, Leo, Edward, William and Roland, two daughters, Miss Rose and Miss Helen, all of St. Nazianz, two brothers, Andrew of Kiel and Frank of Appleton, and two sisters, Mrs. Schwartz of Meeme, and Miss Margaret Groh of St. Nazianz. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9:30 from St. Gregory's church, and the Rev. Fintan Holzknecht will officiate. Burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery.

Groh, William Cornelius (Jan. 5, 1869-July 20, 1928 –husband of Barbara Koenig [married May 14, 1894 at St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Spring Valley, Town of Meeme] –son of Peter Groh and Anna Herr [Peter and Anna were married Feb. 17, 1863 at St. Fidelis, Town of Meeme –their marriage was the first recorded at this church –Peter emigrated from Germany to the Town of Meeme in 1857 –Peter and Anna are buried at St. Fidelis Cemetery in Spring Valley, Town of Meeme –Peter April 30, 1836-April 25, 1917 –the son of Peter Groh –Anna Jan. 30, 1845-March 28, 1898] –born Town of Meeme –storekeeper –on Dec. 9, 1897, in partnership with his brother-in-law John Miller, purchased the grocery store at 103 South Fourth Avenue in St. Nazianz –in the 1900 census for the Town of Liberty both William Groh and his family and John Miller and his family are shown as living here –on Sept. 1, 1902 William purchased John Miller’s half interest in this store –ran this store until his death in 1928 –after his death, his widow Barbara with help from her son Roland ran this business until selling in 1946 –on Jan. 11, 1922 purchased the 85 acre farm centered at 17324 Carstens Lake Road in Section 18, Town of Liberty from his younger brother Andrew Groh –on March 15, 1926, William quit claimed the farmstead for this farm to his wife Barbara –after William’s death in 1928, Barbara sold this lot with farmstead on Feb. 23, 1934 to the widower Joseph Rauch –died from “apoplexy –hypertension –myocardial degeneration”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 2, Row 13, Lot 3 –stone] [marriage record Manitowoc 6-332] [death record Manitowoc 24-147]
