William D. "Bill" Quick, of Nederland, passed away Wednesday at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas, in Port Arthur.

He was a native of New Orleans and received his education from public schools in New Orleans, Louisiana State University and Southeastern Louisiana College. Moving to Nederland in 1954, he went to work for Sun Oil Company, retiring in 1972. He married Datherine Joyce Stanley in 1966 and lived in Nederland where they were active member of The First Baptist Church.

"Bill" was founder of The Friends of Sabine Pass Battleground Park, served on the City of Nederland Zoning Board of Appeals and served for many years on the Planning and Zoning Commission, was elected in 1981, Citizen of the Year by the Nederland BPW Association, their Man of the Year in 1982 and "Mr. Nederland" in 1994. He was a charter member of the Southeast Texas Genealogical and Historical Society in 1969 and served as president of the Society and Editor of "Yellowed Pages" 1983-87. He also organized and was a charter member of the Nederland Historical Society. In 1976, Mr. Quick was the General Chairman of the Bicentennial re-enactment of the Battle of Sabine Pass and was the coordinator/historic advisor for the 125th Anniversary celebration held in 1988.

He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Dick Dowling Camp #1295, Atascosito Historical Society, Tyrrell Historical Library Association, and the Sons of the American Revolution.

He was a member of the Jefferson County Historical Commission, and has served in almost every capacity, including Commission Chairman, newsletter editor, and chairman of nearly every committee.

Bill was also well known in the region because of the many historical papers he has written and published in the "Yellowed Pages" and "The Texas Gulf Historical and Biographical Record".

He was awarded the Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal for Excellence in Historical Research, Writing, Declamation and Education of the War between the States and Confederate History in June 2000 by the Dick Dowling Chapter 404 United Daughters of the Confederacy. He received the coveted Ruth Lester Lifetime Achievement Award from the Governor of Texas in 2001. The award recognizes individuals who have made a significant, long-term contribution to historical preservation in Texas.
