Martin Hoida Dies 11 Hours After Crash

James Blahnik, Driver, Receives Head Lacerations

Cooperstown - An automobile carrying two avid stock car drivers from Two Rivers and apparently traveling at a high rate of speed went out of control on a Highway 141 curve three miles south of this unincorporated village shortly before 11:45 am. Wednesday.

Martin F. Hoida, 25, of 1312 19th St., suffered severe head injuries and died nearly 11 hours later at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital.

The driver, James E. Blahnik, 24, of 1102 Sheridan Rd., received head lacerations and multiple contusions and abrasions but apparently was out of danger Thursday.

Flips Over

County traffic police said the southbound car was out of control for a considerable distance before it bounced off the bank of a deep ditch, flipped end over end and landed on its wheels on the shoulder of the road.

Both occupants were tossed through the front windshield when the car hit the bank. Police said Hoida would probably have survived if the vehicle had been equipped with safety belts.

Hoida was kept alive by mouth to mouth resuscitation administered by Jack DeLorme, sheriff's deputy from Maribel, who was first to arrive on the accident scene. Hoida reportedly had stopped breathing and had a "very shallow pulse", according to police.

Later the victim was given oxygen by County Police Officer James Meidl until an ambulance arrived to take the men to the Two Rivers Hospital.

Stock Car Drivers The accident occured about two miles north of the 141 speedway where Hoida and Blahnik were stock car drivers.

Police Thursday were conducting an investigation to determine where the men had been prior to the accident. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, indicated there would be an inquest.

Hoida's death raised the 1962 county traffic fataility toll to four persons compared with one at this time a year ago.

Hoida was born October 14, 1936, at Two Rivers, son of Frank and Louise Moseler Hoida. He was graduated from St. Luke Parachoial School Two Rivers, and attended Washington High School. He was an employee of the Metal Ware Corp., Two Rivers, but in recent weeks worked as a driver for Dave's Dray Line, Two Rivers. An enthusiast of stock car racing, he was a driver in competition in this area for a number of years. He was a member of ZCBJ Lodge No. 142 and Fox Valley Stock Car Assn.

Funeral Services Surviving are his wife, the former Patricia Kuenzel, whom he married at Two Rivers Feb 25, 1956; his parents, a daughter, Lindy; two sons, Gregory and Ricky; a brother, Robert, of Rt. 1 Mishicot, and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Moseler, of Manitowoc.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 am Saturday at Klein and Stangel Inc Funeral Home, Two Rivers and at 10 am at St Luke Catholic Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. H. J. Schmitz officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 pm Friday, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:45 pm
