Hattie was born near Baltimore, Maryland while her mother, Emma Dickinson, was consulting with doctors about her broken hip. Emma, son Lamar and Hattie returned home to Missoula, Montana in July 1875. They first went by train to Brainerd, Utah, then traveled by stage to Missoula. The trip took 8 weeks.

Hattie was a life member of the Methodist Church and active in the Women's Christian Temperance Union on a local and statewide basis. She served as secretary for the state WCTU. She was also a member of the Mary and Martha Club, an organization for wives of ministers.
