Nicholas had attended MICDS, Horton Watkins High School and graduated from Provo Canyon School in Provo, Utah. He served as an alter boy at the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, in Madison IL.
Nicholas enjoyed cross country running, playing guitar, was a peer mentor at his high school, was bright, witty, and insightful and also a very caring, sensitive and compasionate person.
He had just been accepted into the Missouri University's Honors program of Chemical Engineering. He elected to become an organ donor with his 18 birthday, enabling others the gift of life. He will be sorely missed.
The Nicholas Aaron Aitken Artist-in-Residence Program has been established in his memory. The program is designed for fifth graders but other grades are participating.
Mosaic panels, Confluence, created by students through the program were dedicated this fall (2011) in their permanent place above the second story windows at the school's art center at Forsyth School where Nicholas was an alumnus. The students work with resident artists through all the stages of the development and use of the art project and in relationship to their other studies. It is a unique program for the elementary school level.
