ROCKLAND - Mary P. "Polly" Dudley, 77, died Friday, November 21, 2003 at Shore Village Nursing Center, after an extended illness. Born in Rockland, April 4, 1926, she was one of eleven children of Charles A. and Eneeda B. Wall Nystrom. She was educated in local schools. On May 20th, 1945, she married Walter L. Dudley, Jr. in Rockland, and the couple made their home there all their married lives. Mr. Dudley died June 1, 1994.
A devoted mother, Mrs. Dudley was active in the Parent Teachers Association at South School in Rockland while her children were in attendance there. When her children were older she sold Avon in both the Rockland and Thomaston area. For several years, she worked at National Sea Products where she entertained her fellow employees with her unending wit and humor. For more than 18 years, Polly served as an outreach worker with Mid-Coast Human Resources Council. During that same period, she returned to high school and proudly earned her GED. In 1993, Polly was the recipient of the WCHS Channel 6, Jefferson Award for her outstanding community service. The State of Maine also recognized Polly for her incredible efforts on behalf of the people of Knox County and she received a Certificate of Commendation from the City of Rockland, for going above and beyond the requirements of her job as an outreach worker. An active member of the Rockland Church of the Nazarene, on March 17th, 2000, she received the Distinguished Service Award of the Nazarene World Mission Society; for her contributions to the church, her years as a Sunday School teacher and director of the children's missionary society, and for the many miles she put on her own vehicle serving as the church's only school bus.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Dudley was pre-deceased by four brothers, Earl, Charles, John, and Ernest Nystrom, two sisters Lulu Small and Beverly Nystrom.
She is survived by three sons and their spouses, Frederick and Marilyn Dudley of Florida, Randy and Rhoda Dudley, Walter and Darlene Dudley all of Waldoboro; three daughters and their spouses, Patricia Dudley of Rockland, Wanda and Alan Taylor of Thomaston, Deborah and Paul Rackliff of Spruce Head; five brothers, William Nystrom and his wife Barbara, Edward Nystrom, Richard Kelly, Calvin Gray all of Rockland, Robert Kelly of Waldoboro; two sisters and their husbands, Catherine and Lester LaCombe, Lauretta and Frank Cushman all of Rockland; seven grandchildren, Brian Dudley, Fred Dudley, Crystal Anderson, Eric Rackliff, Nick Rackliff, Stephanie Dudley, Tim Taylor; great grandchildren, Braelynn Anderson, Brandon Dudley, Lance Bennett, as well as many nieces and nephews.
