Mary Ann Howell was the daughter of Isaac Howell and Elizabeth Grey. She is listed as head of her own household in the Lee County, Alabama, 1870 Census, with her two daughters. Her husband, Dr. Towles was a surgeon in the Civil War, and came to Texas following the war. Mary came to Texas in 1872/3 with her two daughters; her father, Isaac Howell; all of her sisters; and two brothers. In the 1880 Census records of Cherokee County, Texas, Mary Ann is listed as a Widow in the household of her father with her youngest daughter, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lee Towles, as Dr. Towles died prior to 1880 when he caught pneumonia from a patient he was treating.
Mary Ann Howell Towles taught school in Tecula, Old Reynolds, Afton Grove, Flint and Bullard, Texas. While teaching school in Flint she was residing with the Carter family and met and married Steve Robert Williams, a widower, on 24 December 1890, in Smith County, Texas. The couple settled in the Flint, Texas, area, and attended the Missionary Baptist Church there, which she helped start.
Myrna Scott reported that, "the Williams family all loved Mary Ann Howell Towles Williams (Mary or Mollie, as she was called)." Myrna goes on to state that her father, Roy (step-grandson of Mary Ann Howell Towles Williams), had very pleasant memories of her and her love for children and kindness. Mary Ann Howell Towles Williams died from blood-poisoning from broken bones caused from a fall, according to family records.
