Jerry L. Williams of Picher was killed Sunday in South Vietnam by mortar fire while he was on patrol on an attack vessel on the Vietnam river system, his parents were notified Monday. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Williams. Williams, 23, is a graduate of high school at Picher and had been married only a week before going to South Vietnam. His wife lives at Sacramento Ca.

PICHER, Okla.
A Picher sailor has been killed in Vietnam, according to information received by his mother, Mrs. Betty Barr, Treece, Kan., and his father, Morris Williams, of Picher. Navy Petty Officer Jerry Leonard Williams, 23, Picher, was killed in action in Vietnam. Details of his death were not available.
Petty Officer Williams had been in Vietnam for about 2 months and had served in the Navy about six years.
He was a native of Picher and was a 1962 graduate of Picher-Cardin High School. He married his wife, Charlotte Williams, two weeks before leaving for Vietnam. She resides in San Diego, Calif.
Other survivors include a brother, Billy Jo Williams, Picher; a sister, Mrs. Susie Dunlap, of Oregon and five half-sisters.

N. Highlands Sailor Dies In Viet Action
Navy Radioman 3C Jerry L. Williams whose wife lives at 3601 Myrtle Ave. North Highlands has been reported killed in action in Vietnam.
The Navy Department said the 23-year-old Navyman was aboard a patrol boat on a river in the Ken Boa Province of South Vietnam when it was attacked by hostile fire Sunday and he was killed
Williams was the son of Mrs. Betty Bar of Picher Oklahoma.

Services have been set for Navy Radioman 3.C. Jerry L. Williams, 23, whose wife lives at 3601 Myrtle Ave. North Highlands. He was aboard a patrol boat on a river in the Ken Hon Province of South Vietnam May 26 when it was attacked by hostile fire and he was killed.
A native of Oklahoma, he leaves his wife Charlotte and parents Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Williams of Oklahoma. He also is survived by a stepson Kevin.
Funeral Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the Lombard & Company Funeral Home. Military Graveside Services will follow at Sierra Hills.

The lead units in the column bore the blunt of the attack. The Boat Captain and Radioman of ASPB-111-1 were killed instantly and two other crewmen were injured when their boat took two rocket and two recoilless hits. Two of the rounds struck the boat's 20 mm cannon. Another hit the mast and the fourth tore into the coxswain's flat.

Final Mission of RM3 Jerry L. Williams
At 0715 hours on May 26, 1968, U.S. Navy river patrol boat APPB-111-1 was one of the lead units in a column of gun boats proceeding to land elements of the 3/47th Infantry Brigade along the Ong Huong River eight miles southeast of Ben Tre when they were attacked from both banks of the river by Viet Cong rocketeers.
APPB-111-1 was struck with two RPG-2 rockets (B-40) and two 75mm recoilless-rifle rounds. Two of the rounds hit the 20mm cannon, disabling it, another hit the mast, and the fourth tore into the coxwain's flat killing instantly the boat's captain, BM2 Ronald Wayne Durbin and Radioman RM3 Jerry Leonard Williams. Two other crewmen were wounded in the attack.
