Ray Collins Sannes was born August 27, 1920, near Gary, MN, the son of Ludvig and Sophie (Peterson) Sannes. He was baptized and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile. He attended country school near Gary, before going to work for area farmers. His work on the farm was interrupted when he answered his call to service for our country in World War II. Upon his return he worked in the Fertile area for John Deere and Bauer Honey.
Ray embraced the simple things in life; he loved to visit and tell stories of his childhood and how he played baseball, his time in France during the War, and working for Bauer Honey. He enjoyed playing cards and following baseball, especially the Minnesota Twins.
On September 27, 1947, he married Bernice Ashling. Together they raised their two children in Fertile. They lived in Fertile for many years and in March 2008 became residents of Fair Meadow Nursing Home.
Ray is survived by his wife, Bernice, Fertile and son, Grant Sannes, Fertile, son-in-law Mike (Bunnie) Messelt, Fargo, one brother, Kenneth (Shirley) Sannes, Fertile, one sister, Dora (Loren) Olson, Ada, MN, 2 granddaughters, Jill (Cody) Miller and Molly (Chad) Olson and 3 great grandchildren, Savannah Miller, Ashleigh Miller and Chase Olson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Sheila Messelt, five brothers, Cyrus, Lawrence, Harry, Arthur and Norman and three sisters, Charlotte Lewis, Garnet Kappes and Vera Werpy.
