Lewis was a carpenter by trade and did architectural designing. He and his wife, Elizabeth Anna Lias settled in Sheldon, Iowa after they were married on December 16, 1884. Lewis built a few houses in Sheldon. He built a home for his family in 1892. The home is located at/was 430 W. 7th Street, Sheldon, Iowa. In 1913 Lewis and Elizabeth moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. During this time Lewis was working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For some unknown reason, Lewis accidentally swallowed carbonic acid which caused his death. Lewis was a member of Woodmen of the World, Order of the Odd Fellows and was an ordained minister.
