Elizabeth Cansada Wright was born November 15, 1827 in McMinn County, Tennessee to William Wilis Wright and Tabitha Elizabeth Martin. At age 14, she married 19 year old Thomas S. Shelton on December 28, 1841, in McMinn County. Their first child, Elvira Jane, was born in November 1842. Elvira had four brothers and sisters by the time the family moved to Miller County Missouri in 1849 or 1850.

Elizabeth and Thomas raised their family in Miller County, Missouri. Thomas died in 1859, and Elizabeth remained in Miller County. In 1860, she is living with eldest child Elvira Jane and Elvira’s husband, and child. She is found in 1880 living with her youngest son Edmond S. Shelton, and her grandson Isaac Shelton. She is found in the next county over--Pulaski County, Missouri--in 1900, living with her son John Monroe Shelton and his family.

In 1910, she is back in Miller County, living with her daughter Dorcas and son-in-law John Ferguson. She died in Iberia, Miller County, Missouri on September 6, 1919, and son-in-law John was the informant on her death certificate.
