William Craw was born in Dartmouth, MA, in 1795, and received a good English education in the excellent New England schools of that early day. He moved to Galesville, Washington County, NY, about 1813 where he learned the blacksmithing trade from his future father-in-law, Obadiah Knapp. He practiced his blacksmithing trade in Galesville/Middle Falls for over 25 years before moving to Schuylerville with his son David in September, 1842 (6 years after the death of his wife Polly). He died in Schuylerville the following year (Nov., 1843). He was a democrat in politics and a Quaker in religion.
