Enlisted as private at Tazewell, Claiborne County, August 9, 1861; mustered at Barboursville, August 17, 1861 in the 1st Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment-Company C, USA. Also called 1st East Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Also called 1st East Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment. Adam was wounded at the battle of Mossy Creek, Tennessee on December 29, 1863. He spent 5 months in a hospital recovering from his wound before he was released back to active service. As a result of his wound, he became partially disabled. He was honorably discharged at Nashville Tennessee, September 17, 1864.
