Son of Alanson & Lovina (Morey) Cornell, his family returned from Canada to Washington County, New York when Zebulon was a boy. During the Civil War Zebulon served in Companies I & C in the Second Regiment, New York Infantry, then in 1863 enlisted at Philadelphia in Company E, 19th Regiment Pennsylvania Cavalry through the end of the war. After the war he moved to Vermont, and on December 29, 1873 married Mary M Metcalf. They raised two children, Edward and Della. He farmed in Orleans county, later moving to Burlington, and finally to Fort Hayes in Columbus, Ohio where his daughter Della lived. His final days were spent in the National Soldiers' Home near Dayton, Ohio. He stood 5' 7" tall, and had blue eyes.
