MILITARY BIOGRAPHY--

PFC Verlon Leon Picklesimer enlisted at Camp Croft, SC, on Sept. 24, 1942, from his residence in Gaston County, NC. His serial number was 34432524. His enlistment papers indicate that he had grammar schooling and his pre-War occupation was 'textiles'. He was single. He joined the 455th AAA Bn., Battery 'C', Headquarters Communications Section, as a field lineman. The unit trained at Camp Stewart and Ft. Benning, Ga., then went overseas to Norfolk, England in Sept. 1943. Verlon's Battery 'C' guarded a B-24 repair airbase at Watton, Norfolk, England... In July 1944, the unit went to France for 'Operation Cobra' as part of Patton's 3rd Army, Walker's XX Corps. They later went into Germany and Austria and returned home in October 1945. The unit shotdown/damaged over 130 German aircraft and became the second highest-scoring antiaircraft unit in Patton's 3rd Army.

NOTE: Verlon was a 'Marksman' at Ft. Benning, Ga., scoring 148 hits on June 7, 1943.

He passed away at age 77.
