MATTINGLY YOUTH KILLED IN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT - JACKSON INJURED WHEN AUTO DESCENDS EMBANKMENT ON 31E
Joseph Edward Mattingly, 19, Samuels, was fatally injured about 12:30 a.m. Monday in an automobile accident on 31E midway between Bardstown and New Haven. His head was crushed. Other passengers in the car were injured. Alex (Sonny) Jackson, Samuels, sustained a severe laceration of the back with perforation of the lung and fracture of five ribs. He is at Flaget Memorial Hospital here. Thomas Anthony Livers and Jesse Mattingly, Jr., Samuels, and Miss Joan Murphy, Bardstown, escaped with lacerations of the head and contusions of the body, Dr. T. G. Forsee said. Mattingly's automobile traveled for approximately 125 feet off the pavement before coming to a stop about 50 feet below the roadbed, it was reported. The group was returning to Bardstown after taking a girl who had been with them home. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Roby Mattingly, Samuels, the youth had been employed for two years at Heaven Hill Distilleries, near Bardstown. He had attended school at St. Gregory's. Surviving are his parents; nine brothers and sisters, Robert Mattingly, New Haven; Mrs. Walter Durbin, Samuels; Mrs. Sam Durbin and Mrs. Adrian Spalding, Bardstown; Linda, Donnie, Betty, James and Houston Mattingly, at home. The body was at the Mann, Greenwell & Arnold Funeral Home at Bardstown. Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church, Bardstown, with high Requiem Mass offered by Rev. James P. McGee. Interment was in the church cemetery.
