US Congressman. An 1808 graduate of the College of William and Mary, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and established a practice in Culpeper County, Virginia. He served as an aide-de-camp in the War of 1812, and was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Elected as a Jacksonian Democrat to the House of Representatives, he served five terms, from 1823 to 1833. He was a member of the Virginia constitutional conventions in 1829 and 1830. After leaving Congress in 1833, he returned to his legal practice. He died at his estate, Fleetwood, in Culpeper County. He was the father of Senator John Strode Barbour, Jr.
