MRS. A. M. JAMES

The many friends in this community were greatly grieved to learn that Mrs. A. M. James had died suddenly at an early hour last Friday morning at the home of her son, Vern James, in this city.

She had attended a patriotic meeting at the M. E. church the evening before and apparently was in usual health when she retired for the night. In the morning the relatives were greatly shocked when they went to awaken her to find that life was extinct.

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by her pastor, were held at the M. E. church on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery.

Sarah Jane Roberts was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, May 30th, 1855, and passed to her eternal rest on Friday, April 5th, 1918. When just a child her parents moved from Ohio to Missouri, where they resided for a few years, and then came to Lucas county, Iowa, which has since been her home.

On October 26th, 1876, she was united in marriage to Anthony M. James. To this union were born four children, all of whom, with her husband, are living to mourn the loss of this loving wife and mother. The children are Mrs. Olive Malone, of Amberg, Wisconsin; Vern, of Chariton; Mrs. Nelle Parsons, of Des Moines; and Miss Lura James, of Cedar Rapids.

She gave her heart to God in early youth and has been a devout member of the M. E. church for many years, and a better example of a true Christian life would be hard to find. She lived her entire life, not for herself, but for her family and friends and was apparently the happiest when almost exhausted from ministering to those she loved.

When the messenger came to transform her from the mortal to the immortal, he came truly as the thief in the night and took her spirit away while she slept. Her passing away will be deplored by a host of friends, who will extend sincere sympathy to the sorrowing children.
