John Alexander Shaw was born July 15, 1853, in Lincoln County, Tennessee to Jeremiah F. Shaw, Sr. and Margaret "Peggy" Guin who were married October 8, 1846. Other children of Jeremiah F. Shaw, Sr. and Margaret "Peggy" Guin, and siblings of John A. Shaw were: William J. "Billy"; Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane; Hugh A.; Jason Hugh; Rebecca Frances; Nancy Ann; Jeremiah F. Shaw, Jr.; H.J. (or T.), and Bartley Shaw. John married Melvina Abigail Gann, d/o Thomas Jefferson Gann and Rachel Louisa Miller, in 1873. Melvina died April 1, 1916, of cardiac arrest while sitting on a milk bucket milking a cow.
John A. Shaw was the 2nd Mayor of Guin after the city was founded, and during other terms. He also served as Coroner of Marion County, Alabama. Under state law, the office of Coroner is charged with various duties. However, the main function is to investigate or view the death of "persons found dead." Other expanded duties of coroners includes but are not limited to the examination of adult and child victims of rape, incest, carnal knowledge, sexual battery, and the examination of adult and child involuntary mental commitments.
John A. Shaw was listed on the 1920 Dothan, Houston County, Alabama Census as a Real Estate Salesman. He died there January 4, 1926. Others in the household in 1920 were John's daughter, Cora Gray, who was 30 years old, and Julian Gray, a three year old grandson.(GMT)
