Halsey Albert Dean, 91, of Bedford, died Monday, August 13, 2007. He was born April 23, 1916 in Bedford, VA, a son of the late James Franklin Dean and Pinkie Estelle Creasy Dean. He was one of thirteen children. He was married to the late, Lydia Margaret Carter for over fifty-nine years.

Halsey was a member of McLean Baptist Church. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. He earned his Bachelors of Science degree from Lynchburg College and Virginia Tech and worked toward his Doctor of Education at the University of Virginia. He worked at the V.A. Regional Office in Roanoke for 15 years and was later promoted as director to the V.A. Central Office in Washington, DC. After 34 years and retiring from the V.A., he worked twenty years as a real estate agent for Weichert Realty in McLean, VA where he had lived for 36 years. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion of Roanoke for 56 years.

Halsey is survived by his two sons, Dr. John Carter Dean and wife, Mary of Amherst, and Halsey Albert Dean, Jr., and wife, Sue of Arkansas and one daughter L. Marge Dean and her long time companion, Andrew Battinelli of Marblehead, MA, one sister, Mary Dean Goodloe and her husband, Colby of Ashland; four grandchildren, Michael Dean and his wife, Meredith of Forest, Paul Dean and his fiancé, Mandi of Keswick, Robert Dean of Lynchburg and Danielle MacFarlane and her husband, Steven of FL; and three great-grandchildren, Daniel Dean, Nathaniel Morris and Kaitlyn Dean.

A celebration of Halsey's life was conducted at Tharp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ray T. Lyons officiating. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery with military graveside honors given by American Legion Post #16.
