At the time of his death Kid worked as Chief Landscape Gardner at the VA Facility for 12 years. He designed and supervised the construction of the sunken gardens.
My grandfather did not live long enough to meet his grandchildren, but his sons, our father's, often spoke of him. They told us that he was a good man, that he loved children, worked hard, and had high standards of honesty, integrity and dignity. When his sons were boys, he'd take them to town and give them each 2 bits and say "here is some walking around money."

Kid is the 3rd Great Grandson of John Fairlie (1717-1798), and Margaret Stewart (Stuart) (1719-1781) from Ayrshire, Scotland. They arrived in America in 1770, at Cape Fear, N.C. on the ship Edinburgh.
The Fairley family can trace their roots to Normandy in the 11th century. They fought along side William the Conqueror at the battle of Hasting, and later migrated to the Scottish highlands where Fairlie Castle and the town of Fairlie sits off the Firth of Clyde. They fought with Robert the Bruce for Scotlands independents from English rule.
He is the 5th Great Grandson of Col. Robert Blackwell (1643-1717) from London, England. He arrived in America in 1660's, owned Blackwell Island in N.Y., and was married to Mary Manningham (1650- ).
