Alexander Watson was killed in the Battle of Batoche during the North West Rebellion. His body was returned to his home of St. Catharines, where he was given a hero's burial. A statue was raised to his memory, and today, it is the only statue in St. Catharines. Originally planned for the family plot at the cemetery, it was placed instead on the lawn in front of city hall, at the request of the citizens. At the dedication of the statue, General Middleton led the ceremonies, which were attended by the largest crowd ever gathered in St. Catharines at the time. The statue has evolved into a memorial for fallen St. Catharines' soldiers of all military conflicts.
