Joan was born in Deloit, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ, May 6, 1933 at the United Methodist Church in Deloit, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at First Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska, on April 2, 1944. She received her education in the Denison Community High School, graduating with the class of 1948. As a young girl, she worked as a secretary with Gaulding Motors.
Joan was united in marriage to Harold Beermann May 22, 1949 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by the Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple settled on a farm south of Denison and was blessed with the birth of 6 children. They lived on the home farm until 1995 when they moved to their current home two miles south of Denison.
She was devoted to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through her efforts as a member of Zion Lutheran Church, served as a Sunday School teacher for many years and as member of Zion's Evening Guild. She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family. She was a gracious homemaker and excelled as a cook and baker. Her talent at sewing, quilting and embroidery is evidenced by the quilts she made for her great-grandchildren. She loved to sing and was a talented pianist, teaching each of her children how to enjoy music as she did and play the piano. In her leisure time, she could be found working cross word puzzles, tending to her flower garden, or helping Harold with his miniature horses. She and Harold traveled extensively to countries that included: France, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Germany, Portugal and the Netherlands. While in Germany, they met relatives and compared genealogy documents of the family history.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include, her husband, Harold; one son, Donald and his wife, Holly; five daughters, Susan and her husband, John; Sandra and her husband, Tom; Cynthia and her husband, Jack; Bette and her husband, Bob; and Barbara and her husband, Randy; 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carol and her husband, Ron; Kathy ; and one brother, Richard and his wife, Mary; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 3 P.m., Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and graveside rites held at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided accompaniment for the congregational hymn, "Nearer, My God, To Thee," and vocalist selections, "The Lord's Prayer," and "The Old Rugged Cross." Vocalists were Teena Mosel and Larry Boeck. Serving as pallbearers were Michael Bockelmann, Bernie Bockelmann, Brian Beermann, Dale Beermann, Clayton Juhl, Wade Juhl, Kevin Rost, and Sean Rost. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Evening Guild.
