EDWARD LONG
Old Settler passes to His Rest on His 80th Birthday
Death has again entered our village and this time taken one of its older citizens from the standpoint of both age and citizenship.
Edward Long was born near Mt. Clemens, Mich., Mat 23, 1836. About 1854 he, with his parents, came to Minnesota, making the trip from the old Michigan home to St. Paul in a wagon. They immediately went to Stillwater and settled on a farm near that city. About two years later the family moved to what is now the Village of Centerville.
In 1859 he was united in marriage to Miss Ernestina Wenzel at the home of the bride's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Long made their home in Centerville until May 1863, when they moved to White Bear and shortly purchased the 80 acres of land north of the fairgrounds known as the Long homestead.
In 1883 he and his son Franklin erected the store building on Fourth street across the tracks from the depot and conducted a store under the firm name Ed. Long & Son. He soon after erected a residence by the side of the store where he made his home for the remainder of his life.
As one of the old settlers of the town of White Bear he was prominent as one of the history makers of the township and of this section of the county, having served the public in the capacity of supervisor and numerous other offices of the town.
He with Mrs. Long became charter members of the local Presbyterian church of which organization he has been a faithful member.
He is survived by his widow, three sons, R.H., F.E., and H.J., and one daughter, Mrs. W. T. Bacon, 28 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, all of which live in or near White Bear lake except two of the grandchildren. Also two sisters, Mrs. Anna Knox of Superior, Wis., and Mrs. Wm. Laub of White Bear; and six brothers, Elijah, William, Philando, C.P. and F.B. of White Bear, and Davis of Fargo, N. D.
The funeral took place today, services being conducted at the home at 2 o'clock and at the Presbyterian church at 2:30 and were conducted by the pastor Rev. J.C. Robinson. Burial was in Union Cemetery, Those chosen to bear the casket were six of the grandsons, Arthur, Elmer, Walter, Lester, Donald and Dwight.
