ANDREWS: The death of Marion Doreen Andrews, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, occurred November 20th, 2009.

Doreen was born August 11th, 1929, eldest daughter of Frank and Dora Wolfe of Douglas, Manitoba. They lived on a farm and Doreen loved country life. She inherited her father's Irish blue eyes. Dewitt Mitchell always called her "bright eyes". Sister Helen born 1933 and brother Mel 1937.

She attended Elton School until Grade 9, when the school closed and took Grade 10 and 11 at Douglas High School, followed by a business course at Wheat City Business College. She took piano lessons from Alma Boles, Olive Hooke and Emma J. Muirhead. She also was a member of the Douglas Junior Choir, lead by Mrs. Muirhead. She was a member of the Douglas United Church. Alice Willmott was her Sunday School teacher. She and Mona Mitchell were best friends through childhood and for the rest of their adult lives.

Her first attempt at baking was a chocolate cake when she was nine. The compliments she received encouraged her to enjoy cooking all her life, but her first biscuits were something else. She loved helping her Dad by driving the tractor and shovelling grain in harvest time, but helped her Mom with cleaning and gardening, which led to her love of gardening later on.

When she was 14, she met Mona's cousin Bud Andrews (youngest son of Albert and Abbie Andrews), and was smitten. After business college she worked for a short time for Sears Order Office and Oakland Hatcheries.

When she was 18, she and Bud were married September 29th, 1947 in the old Knox United Church, Brandon, exactly 6 years after his twin sister Lois was married to Milton Jacks in the same church.

Bud and Doreen spent much of 1948 in West Summerland, British Columbia where Bud worked in his Aunt's cannery and where their first son Neil Douglas was born. In December, they returned to Manitoba and took up farming.

During the next eleven years three more children were born to them - Darryl William in 1951, Laurie Albert in 1954, and Karyn Doreen in 1958. Doreen always had a big garden for fresh veggies in summer and canned or frozen for winter. She loved picking wild fruit to make jellies and jams. Doreen was a stay at home Mom who drove her kids to school, music lessons, swimming lessons, ball games, school activities and curling. She encouraged them in any endeavor they undertook. She iced and decorated wedding cakes. At age 40, being terrified of water, she joined the YMCA swimming and received her beginners star. She volunteered in many organizations, Women's Auxiliary, Women's Missionary Society and Douglas Community Hall & Community Rink. She was a member of Douglas Women's Institute for over 50 years. While belonging to Elton Campbell Community Group, she took an active roll in the erecting of cairns to commemorate Elton School which she had attended and Campbell School which Bud had attended. It was interesting that her teacher, Nora (Fraser) Kirk and Bud's teacher, Mary (Highfield) Collins were the only living teachers, and they dedicated the cairns.

In 1977 Doreen took a position of Unit Clerk at Brandon General Hospital and retired with the "magic 80" in 1993.

In 1995 Bud and Doreen left the farm, partly because of health, she had asthma and worried about snow blocked roads in winter. They moved to 10 Imperial Place in Brandon.

She will always be remembered by her sons for burning their baseball cards, when no one knew their value. Doreen was predeceased by Bud's parents, her parents, her sister Helen Caithness, Bud's sisters, Ruth Watson, Lois Reid and Grace Ackney and their husbands, and Bud's brother Ernest. In February 2007, Bud and Doreen lost their beloved son Neil to a horrific fatal brain disease. Left to mourn is her loving husband Bud, married 62 years. Her children, son Darryl (Barb) of Brandon, and their son Ryan of Winnipeg. Son Laurie (Mary Jamison) of St. Albert, Alberta, son Jeff of Burnaby, British Columbia. Her daughter Karyn (Len) Kondro, and their sons Jay and Devin of St. Alberta, Alberta. Neil's wife, Heather Andrews, son Nathan (Kristin) and their children Parker and Taylor, all of Brandon, and daughter Tara of Calgary, Alberta. One brother Mel (Kay) Wolfe of Brandon and brother-in-law Les Reid of Brandon. Also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for family and friends was held at the Douglas United Church, Douglas, MB on Thursday, November 26, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Barb Jardine officiating. Interment in the Madford Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in memory of Doreen may be made to the Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation, 203 - 37 11th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4J2 or a charity of choice.
