An Obituary from "Gatesville Messenger & Star Forum," Thursday, June 26, 1975:

James D. Bates of Gatesville was killed at 6 p.m. Monday when he was accidentally pinned beneath a small frame building being unloaded from a house-moving rig on the Bob Miller farm eight miles west of Gatesville.
Mr. Bates, 40, a house mover by trade, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Stony Hammack.
...an assistant, Amilo Rodriguez, winched the building up to free Mr. Bates and then went for help.
Funeral services for Mr. Bates were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Gatesville Funeral Home chapel and were conducted by Rev. Joe Broadway. Burial was in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Bates was born in Lampasas County Aug. 6, 1934, but lived in the Gatesville area most of his life. He graduated in 1952 from Gatesville High School, where he was a star football player.
He and his family made their home on Coryell City Road.
He was a Baptist.
Mr. Bates is survived by his wife, Mrs. Oneta Bates of Gatesville; one daughter, Sherry Bates, and two sons, Michael Bates and Billy Bates, all of Gatesvilie; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Newell Bates of Gatesville; one brother, Dewayne Bates of Gatesville; his grandfather, George Matchen of Lampasas and his grandmother, Mrs. Emma Webb of Lampasas.
Pallbearers for Mr. Bates' funeral were Robert Patterson, Amilo Rodriquez, Harold Bates, Richard Bates, Wes Scott, M. D. Gartman, Lynn Haferkamp, and Jeff Cathey.
