His first wife was Margaret St. John; following her passing, he married Julia Allen Wilkeson in 1851. She died in 1853, and his third wife was Maria Bird (died on June 28,1876). In 1836 he was editor of the "Commercial Advertiser" in Buffalo, NY. For the rest of his life, with a couple of brief intervals, he had editorial control of this newspaper. In 1849 he was appointed by President Zachery Taylor as Charge-d'-Affairs at Bogato, Columbia. In 1850, President Millard Fillmore appointed him to a similar post in Vienna, Austria. In 1858 in Buffalo, NY he suffered a paralytic attack which resulted in his death.
