Indianapolis Journal - Wednesday, February 27, 1901:

Mrs. Martha Test Irwin, aunt of Gen. Lew Wallace and Benjamin Harrison, died at her residence on North Alabama Street about 5 o'clock yesterday morning. Mrs. Irwin had been in excellent health during the early part of the winter but was taken with a sudden attack of grip last Thursday. Rapidly growing worse, she at last became unconscious on Monday and remained so until her death which was probably due to pneumonia.

Mrs. Irwin came from one of the oldest families in the State. She was born about 1816 at Brookville, Indiana, a daughter of Judge John Test and a sister of the late Judge Charles H. Test. She spent her early days at Brookville, moving later with her father's family to Mobile, Alabama, where she met Mr. Archibald Irwin, Jr. of Cincinnati who not long after became her second husband. It was at Cincinnati that Mrs. Irwin was so highly complimented by Judge Corwin of Ohio who said that Mrs. Irwin was one of the best woman conversationalists he had ever known.

Mr. Archibald Irwin, Jr. was a prominent citizen of Cincinnati and was an uncle of Benjamin Harrison. After only two years of married life, Mr. Irwin died of cholera. Then Mrs. Irwin moved in succession to Indianapolis, Chicago, St. Paul, California, and finally returned to Indianapolis about three years ago where she had since resided. For a number of years, Mr. Irwin was a contributor to various magazines of the country and was possessed of a thoroughly artistic nature.

She leaves a son, Edward T. Sumwalt, who is well known as a wholesale lumber merchant of this city. the funeral will probably take place Friday from the residence of the Rev. Dean Peters of the Episcopal Cathedral. She will be buried in Crown Hill Cemetery by the side of her sister, Mrs. Esther Wallace, who was the mother of Gen. Lew Wallace.
