Arthur James Hepler, 82, Indianapolis died January 22, 2004. The son of Arthur McComb Hepler and Ruth Penninah (Walters) Hepler, he was born in New Bethlehem, PA on May 22, 1921. He served in the army for four years in Europe and the Pacific during World War II. He graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1949. He was married to Marian Boyd of Timblin, PA on September 6, 1952.

During his career, Mr. Hepler worked for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, Ford Motor Company, Stewart-Warner Corporation, and Western Electric Corporation. He retired from his last position as Principal Gas Engineer for the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission in 1986.

Mr. Hepler pursued a lifelong love of music from the age of seven when he first began playing the trumpet. In Indianapolis, he played trumpet in the Scottish Rite Orchestra, and with the Murat Music Men. He also led his own four-piece band, which played for local dances and functions. He continued to play his trumpet right up to the end of his life.

Mr. Hepler belonged to the Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine and was a life member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local #3. He was 54-year member of the American Legion and an active member of Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Jim, as he was known to family and friends, was devoted to his family. Survivors include his wife, Marian Avis (Boyd) Hepler; daughter, Linda Marie (Hepler) O'Brien and husband, Dennis T. O'Brien; son, David James Hepler and wife, Robbie L. (McConnell) Hepler; grandchildren, Maureen Michelle O'Brien and John Frederick O'Brien; step-grandchildren Alan G. Passmore, and Josh L. Passmore; niece, Whitney Almquist, and nephew, Winston Wise.

Memorial Services will be conducted Monday January 26, 2004 at 2:00 P. M. in the Peace Chapel of the Community Mausoleum of Crown Hill Cemetery, where friends may from 1:00-2:00 P. M. Memorial contributions may be made to Shrine Hospitals for Children c/o Murat Shrine or the Indianapolis Symphonic Band c/o the funeral home. Arrangements entrusted to Crown Hill Funeral Home.
