"The Republican, Danville, IN, Thursday, December 31, 1896 DEATH OF A WELL KNOWN MINISTER IN THE METHODIST CHURCH Rev. Sampson Tincher, a pioneer minister of the Methodist church, died at his home in Belleville, Saturday, of paralysis. The funeral was held from Roberts Park church in Indianapolis Tuesday and was largely attended. The burial was at Crown Hill. Mr. Tincher was born in Lawrence county, Indiana, January 27th 1824. He was married to Mary Bales, August 11th 1842. They had seven children, two of whom, a daughter and a son-Rev. F. S. Tincher-survive, with the widow. Sampson Tincher was converted at the Salem Camp Ground in August, 1837, and at the same time united with the Methodist Episcopal church. He was licensed to exhort in 1840, when only sixteen years old, and to preach in 1843, when only nineteen. He was admitted to membership in the Indiana conference October 12th 1846, and served the church in the following appointments: 1847, Martinsville; 1848, Brownstown; 1849, Morgantown; 1850, Springville; 1851, Bedford; 1852 and 1853, Columbus; 1854, and 1855, Charlestown; 1856 ad 1857; Roberts, Madison; 1858 and 1859, Aurora; 1860 and 1861, Rising Sun; 1862 to 1865, presiding elder Lawrenceburg district; 1865 to 1868, presiding elder Jeffersonville district; 1869 to 1871, Moores Hill; 1872 to 1874 Lawrenceburg; 1875 to 1876, Grace church, Indianapolis; 1877 to 1879, First church, Greensburg; 1880, Columbus; 1881 to 1883, Shelbyville; 1884 to 1890, presiding elder Indianapolis district; 1892 and 1893, City Missionary of Indianapolis; 1893, Clifford avenue church, Indianapolis.

Thus he served for forty-seven years in the active itinerant ministry and for the past three years he was on the superannuated list. He was present at every session of his conference for fifty years of his ministry, except the last session. His physical condition would not permit him to preach a semi-centennial sermon. He was a delegate to the General Conference of 1872. He was trustee of Moores Hill College for many years, and president of the board of trustees after the death of the Rev. Dr. E. G. Wood."
