The son of Isaac Thurber and Drusilla Hicks, Leonard may have been born as late as 1810 according to some records, and in New Hampshire, Vermont, New York or Canada. Also his name may have originally been Learned as I believe he was named after a man named Royal Learned, and early church records list his name as "Larned". A farmer and potash manufacturer, he was a devout Anglican who learned herbal medicine from Native Americans and treated the sick. He married Louisa Ann Stevens c. 1833 in Quebec, though no formal record seems to exist.
