John Johnston came to Montana from the Palouse area of Washington around 1908 - 1910 as a homesteader with his uncle Richard R. Johnston who was only 8 years older than John. The homestead was in the Wilson community area east of Benton Lake and about 15 miles to the Northwest of Great Falls.

John started the Wilson Post Office and store there on his homestead and he also farmed and ranched in this area until 1924. After leaving the homestead he moved and ranched in the Simms, Montana area and retired from that in 1943. Excerpts from a story by his son Gib Johnston in, "They Called them Back".
