Wanda Rae (Brown) Ahern, 84, died at 12:40 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007, at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was born March 11, 1923, in Patterson in Greene Count, the third of four children born to the late Hulbert and Grace G. (Willis) Brown.

She was raised in the Patterson area and married Clifford D. Ahern of Feb. 9, 1939, in Bowling Green, Mo. They began their life together in Patterson and shortly thereafter, moved to White hall. They resided there for many years before moving to Jerseyville in 1966, where she remained until two years ago, when she moved to East Alton to be closer to her family.

She was a checker at the Kroger store in White Hall later working at the Jerseyville location, where she retired as head checker after 30 years of dedicated service.

She was a hardworking Christian woman who loved to cook and she enjoyed fishing and camping. She was a loving mother and grandmother and possessed a great sense of humor. She loved to play rummy and definitely played to win.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary D. and Pat Ahern of Wood River, Danny G. and Diane Ahern of New Berlin and Gale D. and Cody Ahern of La Platta, Md.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eugenia Ringering of East Alton and Iona Rother of Roxana; and a brother and sister-in-law, James A. and Linda Brown of Rockford, Ill.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, who died Jan. 9, 2003; a granddaughter, Rae Denise; and a great-grandson, Dominick Zini.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Ed Haun officiated. Burial followed at Pine Tree Cemetery in Patterson. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville, where she was a member.
