Mr. Dave Burkett Smith, lifelong resident of Woodruff County, died at 1:10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 1990, at the Woodruff County Nursing Home in McCrory where he had been a resident for the past five years. He was 82 and died following an extended illness. Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at the Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in McCrory with the Rev. Emmanuel Long of McCrory officiating. Interment was in the Woodman Cemetery, Woodruff County. Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Smith was born Feb. 29, 1908in Woodruff County the son of the late Robert and Kitty Pyland Smith. He attended school in the Chapel Grove Community in Woodruff County and was married Oct. 27, 1929 to the former Ida Edwards who survives. He was a farmer and landowner in Woodruff County for many years before his retirement and was a member of the Methodist Church. He has formerly served as a Woodruff County school bus driver for past years and was also responsible for the delivery of the Arkansas Gazette newspaper in McCrory before his retirement. Mr. Smith enjoyed gardening and baseball. In addition to his wife he is survived by his daughter, Peggy Stutts of Crown Point, Ind.; two sons, Billy Dave Smith of McCrory and Bobby Joe Smith of Memphis; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Jean Smith, who died July 19, 1930 and a son, Donald M. Smith, who died Jan. 4, 1987. Pallbearers were James Jackson, Jack Keating, James Long, Ellis Reeves, Roger Smith and Jack Turner. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Ford, Vernon Golden, Son Long, Larry Smith and Maurice Stutts. The family request that memorials be made to the Woodruff County Nursing Home.
