John Brown was born abt. 1836 in Campbell County, Tennessee to Noah Brown and Lily Young. He married Lucinda Tuggle December 2, 1858 in Tennessee. He was then age 22. They had eight children. According to census records, he died between 1870-1880 in Kentucky.

According to the 1870 Federal Census, John and his family were living in the Slickford District, Wayne County, Kentucky. The 1880 Federal Census, Slickford, Wayne County, Kentucky, shows that Lucinda is widowed. By March 1895, she had moved with her children to Montgomery County, Kansas (Ks. State Census Collection 1855-1925).
